- Abstract
- Alternative technologies other than incineration systems, that are capable of convertingorganic wastes to recyclable material and/or energy resources, are much desired in recentyears. The anaerobic digestion, which is a proven technology in the fields of sanitary andenvironmental engineering since the 19th century, has been re-evaluated for its energy-savingcharacteristics and capability of recovering fuel in the form of biogas. Technological modificationson the system including thermophilic operation and new reactor designs have substantiallyimproved system performance, especially, on garbage, and several actual biogasificationplants on garbage are already in operation.
